When I saw a new music, dance, and theatre program open just blocks from my home, I signed both of my children right up for some extracurricular fun. But what I didn’t expect was kids performing in full costume and set productions that rival most high school musicals.

My son was “the Wizard” in The Wizard of Oz. But this is a picture of him being something else in a random scene.

Music Theatre Philly’s goal is to create a professional training ground for young artists by cultivating a creative, encouraging, and disciplined environment while maintaining the integrity of musical theatre.

From summer camps and seasonal classes for adults and children of all ages, each program is designed to build confidence, respect, and teamwork, while helping each individual find their personal voice through artistic training.

Classes are divided by age which allows each group of students to feel confident that they are on the same playing field of development with their peers. Each class is specifically designed to fit the students and is customized for their skill and interest level.

Whether your child does an afterschool or weekend program or a week of summer camp, they culminate with showcases are held on professional stages.

Here is my daughter in one of her showcases, shortly after cutting off her own hair.

This spring will offer various age-level productions of Beauty and the Beast and 101 Dalmatians.  There are also classes for tap, jazz, hip-hop, and complete Broadway training. Even grown-ups can channel their inner Hamilton with various musical theatre classes and the new “Broadway Body Sculpt for adults looking to work it out in a high energy atmosphere mixing cardio and sculpting to your favorite Broadway hits.

Music Theatre Philly has a limited number of scholarship opportunities, based on both artistic potential and need. Learn more and check out all the offerings at www.musictheatrephilly.com
