Parents of Teenagers… It’s No Picnic

Written by Guest Contributor

Being a teen is difficult, but it’s also challenging to be the PARENT of a teenager. There’s no book or website that provides all the answers in this ever-changing world. It’s challenging to find a place for kids this age to spend their summers – too old for traditional camp, too young for the workforce. Most teens beg their parents to just stay home in the summer – TRANSLATION: Sitting in the A/C, staring at screens all day long, doing nothing constructive. Nothing to help prepare them for the challenges of college, career, or life. Fast forward 10 years- could be your unmotivated 25 year old… scary thought!

“But that’s what he/she wants to do, and I’m not going to force them- I don’t need to hear their grief.” – We hear this from parents all the time, and to this, I respond: WHO IS THE BOSS IN YOUR FAMILY? Because it should be the parents, not the ornery teen that has little idea of what is best for them.

The Liberty Lake Teen Leadership Program creates a unique space for this age group. Tactfully blending responsibility and fun for our teens to be challenged, make positive choices, receive feedback, and get their hands dirty through active learning experiences.

At Liberty Lake, we believe that it truly “takes a village” and are proud to be the village for hundreds of teens every summer, including a select 100 in our leadership program. We unplug at the gate, and Digitally Detox with Real-Life Reconnection – Outdoors, led by a supportive group of inspiring young adults!
