Island Rhythms: Celebrating Steel Drums
October 14 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm EDTFree
Learn about the history of steel drums and how they evolved from the outlawing of skin drums and bamboo in Trinidad in the 1930’s. Enjoy a steel drum concert, where different songs and rhythms from the islands will create a wonderful and inspiring afternoon of music. Trinidad North’s Founder, and drum maker, Dave Gettes, will discuss and show how steel drums are made. The Trinidad North Steel Drum Band has played from Trinidad to New Zealand with Bob Marley and the Wailers, Earth Wind and Fire, Chicago, Kenney Chesney, Jimmy Buffett, and Philadelphia’s own Roots. Following the performance, feel free to explore the Museum using our family rhythm activities.
